Building Research Databases from Scratch

Uday builds structured, usable datasets out of fragmented, multi-source information. He does not stop at collecting data; he designs the output so that the person using it can act on it without coming back to him. This pattern shows up across his work at A&M: the UK corporate population database built from seven to eight sources, the ADAS sector map pulling from PitchBook, MergerMarket, and Capital IQ, and the Bain Capital account plan assembled from press releases and news coverage. His instinct is to automate where possible. The Bain Capital dashboard was built to refresh automatically, cutting a thirty-minute manual lookup to a few clicks. The UK population database came with a guidance deck so stakeholders could self-serve. The result is research that gets used, not just delivered.

Structuring Ambiguous Research Briefs

When the brief is vague or the market is poorly mapped, Uday builds a working structure before he starts collecting. He starts by clarifying the requirement, forms a hypothesis, then uses secondary sources and expert interviews to validate or challenge it. This approach showed up in the private debt project at A&M, where no single data source existed and the market was opaque. He used expert interviews as the primary validation mechanism, designing questionnaires with both check questions and in-depth questions to test whether the expert's knowledge was reliable. The same instinct appeared in the Spain retail targeting project, where he pushed back on a stakeholder's pre-formed list after his own research showed one of the four target companies did not meet A&M's benchmarks. He prepared his justification thoroughly before raising it, and the stakeholder accepted the revision. His default is to build the map before committing to the answer.

Building Independent Investment Views

Uday forms investment views outside of his day job, using the same analytical rigour he applies at work. He picks sectors and companies based on genuine curiosity, builds the model, and backs his conclusions with his own capital or his own name. He built a full equity research report on TBO Tech in his third year of college, covering DCF, ratio analysis, relative valuation, sensitivity analysis, and scenario analysis. He invested personal capital on the basis of the report. He also authored an investment thesis on India's green hydrogen sector for Havish M Consulting, covering the full value chain, competitive landscape, and structural headwinds. The thesis was used by Havish in their investment and business decisions. He holds CFA Level 1 and has followed the startup and VC ecosystem closely since college.
