The Story
Yajur was assigned a research task at Warmup Ventures on a deal that had not been publicly announced. The brief was unclear on two levels: the specific research question was not well-defined, and the company's business model appeared to be in flux, with signals suggesting the founder might be pivoting the core proposition.
Rather than making assumptions and proceeding, Yajur escalated his questions upward through the team. He started with the associates above him, then moved to more senior team members. The questions he raised were not just about the assignment scope but about the business itself, which he found difficult to interpret from the materials provided.
The ambiguity was significant enough that the partner directed him to speak directly with the founders. In that conversation, Yajur's read on the business model shift was confirmed. The founders were indeed reconsidering their core direction, and the direct conversation gave him a clearer picture of where the business actually stood versus how it had been presented in the brief.
With that clarity, he was able to structure his findings accurately and present them to the assignment owner. His approach throughout was to surface uncertainty rather than paper over it, on the basis that the downstream decisions from research in an investment context are consequential enough to warrant the extra step.
