The Story

Vasu evaluated LightSpeed Photonics, a semiconductor company building optical interconnects for AI data centers. The company's product addressed a specific bottleneck in data center architecture: while most innovation in AI infrastructure had focused on GPU and rack-level computation, the data transfer pathway between GPUs and CPUs, the main highway for moving data across racks, had seen little improvement. LightSpeed's optical interconnects offered lower weight and higher energy efficiency compared to existing copper-based solutions.

Validating the Market Opportunity

He led the primary research for this investment. He mapped the data center market using the Gartner Hype Cycle, analyzing the TAM and SAM for data center infrastructure to validate the scale of the opportunity. With AI workloads driving a significant expansion in data center construction across India and globally, the timing of the company's commercialization push was a key factor in the evaluation.

He spoke with Indian cloud infrastructure players including Yota, Nyasa, and Neve Cloud to validate the problem from the customer side. The research confirmed that the product was at the inflection point: the core research work was complete, the product was ready, and the company was moving into commercialization. Industry experts already working with data centers validated both the problem and the solution.

Investment Decision

The combination of a validated customer problem, a product at the commercialization stage, and a structurally growing market gave the team conviction to invest. The company's optical interconnects addressed a gap that was becoming more acute as AI data center density increased, and the energy efficiency and cost reduction benefits were confirmed by the customer conversations Vasu led.
