The Story
Tanisha took on the Vimeo research project at TresVista as a solo workstream, supporting a PE client evaluating a potential investment in the video hosting and editing platform. The timing was 2019 to 2020, as COVID-driven remote work was accelerating demand for video tools across enterprise and consumer segments.
She began by building a full company profile: headline metrics, product mix, competitive landscape, and management history. Because Vimeo was a private company at the time, public data was limited. She sourced information across Traction, Seeking Alpha, CapIQ, FactSet, and other databases, piecing together a picture of the business from fragmented sources.
The competitive benchmarking mapped Vimeo against its closest peers on revenue, market positioning, and differentiation. The analysis identified Vimeo's positioning as a premium, creator-focused platform distinct from YouTube's ad-supported model, which gave it a defensible niche in the enterprise and professional video segment.
For the financial analysis, she built a comparable company model, extracting relevant industry multiples from publicly traded peers and applying them to Vimeo's financials. The valuation came in favorably relative to comparable companies. The company carried limited debt, and the unit economics case was strong: as a technology platform, per-unit costs would fall as the customer base scaled.
The investment recommendation was positive. The industry tailwind from remote work adoption, the favorable valuation relative to peers, the clean balance sheet, and the improving unit economics trajectory all supported a go-ahead call. The memo was delivered to the PE client with a clear recommendation to proceed.
