The Story

Tanisha led the research workstream for BK Agro's domestic expansion into Orissa. The company was considering an inorganic route: acquiring a distressed unit whose previous owner had gone bankrupt. Before any capital commitment, two questions had to be answered. Why did the previous owner fail? And was the geography genuinely attractive for BK Agro?

To answer the first question, Tanisha conducted on-the-ground primary research, speaking directly with distributors, transporters, and industry players in the area to piece together what had gone wrong. The goal was to separate structural market problems from operator-specific failures, so the company could assess whether the same fate was avoidable.

For the market attractiveness question, she ran a parallel research track combining primary interviews with distributors to understand product preferences and demand patterns, and secondary research through industry reports to size the opportunity. The distributor conversations were harder than expected. Many were unresponsive, and the responses that did come in were inconsistent, making it difficult to identify a reliable signal.

Rather than forcing a conclusion from noisy data, she shifted the validation approach. The team launched a pilot in the market, putting product in front of real buyers before committing to full-scale entry. The pilot gave them a ground-truth check on the assumptions the research had surfaced and confirmed that the demand signal was real.

The expansion went ahead. BK Agro acquired the distressed unit, achieving sixty percent cost savings compared to building a new facility, and the Orissa geography became a productive part of the company's domestic footprint.
