The Story

Shovan was tracking Pidilite's Dr. Fix It brand after noticing consistent market share losses across Q1, Q2, and Q3 of FY25. The management concalls were not surfacing a clear explanation. He decided to go to the channel directly.

He visited retailers across multiple markets, including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and North India, speaking with store owners he had established prior relationships with. The question was simple: why are you not keeping Dr. Fix It on your shelf?

The answer was not about product quality or brand awareness. The constraint was margin economics. Dr. Fix It's three manufacturing units are concentrated in southern India, in Mysore, Bengaluru, and Uttarakhand. The product comes in heavy tub packaging, which makes transport costs from those facilities to retail stores across the country disproportionately high. That cost structure left Pidilite unable to offer retailers a competitive margin, and competing products with better margin profiles were filling the shelf space instead.

This was a structural finding, not a cyclical one, and it was not visible in any public disclosure. Shovan brought the finding back to his COO and made the case for additional research budget to deepen the work. The COO approved the budget, and the finding was incorporated into the research report to give subscribers a grounded view of the market share dynamics that the numbers alone could not explain.
