The Story

Samrudhi joined EY's corporate taxation team as an Article Trainee and was placed on a reinsurance client, one of the more technically complex sectors in financial services. Reinsurance does not recognize revenue or costs the way standard businesses do, and actuarial processes govern much of the financial reporting. Her first task was to build enough technical fluency to do useful research, which she did by working through the sector's accounting and regulatory framework before engaging with any client-specific work.

The core research work involved analyzing case laws specific to the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal. A key constraint shaped the entire research process: ITAT rulings are jurisdiction-specific, and every case law had to be sourced from the correct jurisdiction before its facts could be evaluated.

Samrudhi's approach was to match the facts of each case law to the facts of her client's situation before considering whether the ruling was applicable. A case from the same industry or with a similar conclusion was not sufficient; the factual alignment had to hold. She also researched tax commentaries from senior legal counsels who had taken and defended positions on similar questions.

The research added to the team's existing position on the client matter, strengthening the evidentiary base rather than changing the direction of the advice.
