The Story
Samrudhi took on the CRDMO analysis at a point where senior leadership had early interest in the contract research and drug manufacturing space, but no structured view of the market. She owned the project entirely, from the initial brief to the final presentation, with no senior support.
She started by building her own understanding of the sector's technical vocabulary. Pharma's value chain, the distinction between generic and innovative drugs, the roles of manufacturers, researchers, and marketers were all unfamiliar territory. She mapped these before touching any competitive data, so the analysis would be grounded rather than superficial.
With that foundation in place, she structured the analysis in layers. She sized the global and Indian markets, identified the tailwinds driving India's CRDMO growth, particularly the China-plus-one policy shift, and then moved to a detailed player analysis. She examined Aurobindo Pharma, Dr. Reddy's, Divi Laboratories, and others, mapping their drug portfolios, customer geographies, and whether they were positioned in research, manufacturing, or both.
She then layered in financials: gross margins, EBITDA margins, and CapEx requirements for greenfield entry. Her view was that financial credibility had to underpin the strategic recommendation, not sit alongside it as an afterthought.
She also analyzed partnership and inorganic entry patterns among existing players, which shaped her thinking on how a new entrant could realistically build a position.
The final deck walked senior leadership from technical context through market sizing, competitive landscape, regulatory framework, and financial benchmarks, before arriving at a recommendation on entry rationale. Leadership appreciated the depth and rigor of the work, and the quality of the output directly led to Samrudhi being moved to the Cables and Wires team for their initial execution phase.
