Tata Insights: Delivering a Data Governance Platform for an Enterprise Client

At Tata Insights and Quants, Raj was brought in as the youngest manager in the Tata Group at 25, tasked with bridging business requirements and technical delivery for enterprise analytics clients. His most significant engagement was with a large chemical industry client that needed to overhaul its data infrastructure.

The client's problem was foundational: their data pipeline was fragmented, ungoverned, and largely manual. The mandate was to design and implement a data governance framework, stand up a data governance office, and build a managed analytics platform that could ingest data from multiple sources, apply governance standards, and deliver reliable reporting.

Raj owned the client relationship and the full implementation. He gathered requirements directly from client stakeholders, coordinated data stewards, and worked with engineers to design and build the data pipeline. The governance framework was established before any platform work began, ensuring the data flowing into the system met the standards the client needed.

Navigating Data Privacy Resistance

The most significant obstacle was the client's reluctance to move data to Azure Cloud. Data privacy concerns were deeply held, and the client was not willing to expose sensitive information to a cloud environment without significant reassurance.

Raj and the team addressed this incrementally. They began by explaining the security protocols provided by Azure, then proposed a phased migration starting with non-PII data only. By demonstrating the security and reliability of the cloud environment with a limited, lower-risk data set, they built enough trust to proceed with the full migration. The complete data platform was implemented after the client's confidence in the cloud environment was established.
