The Story
At Nielsen, Raj led the build of Ask Nielsen, an AI-powered tool designed to let users query Nielsen's internal data through a natural language interface. The product was built from scratch, with a committed launch timeline and cross-functional teams contributing across engineering, data, and product.
As the team approached launch, a significant blocker emerged: InfoSec and legal had not cleared the PII data that made up 60% of the product's intended data set. The features were complete, the engineering work was done, and the team had met every internal milestone. The hold was entirely on the compliance side.
Raj faced a clear decision: wait for full clearance and miss the committed launch date, or ship with the 40% of data that had already been approved and resolve the PII constraints post-launch. He chose to launch.
His reasoning was straightforward. The team had delivered. Holding the launch because of a compliance process that was outside the team's control would have put the team in an escalation position they had not earned. He was confident the PII issues were solvable and that the 40% data set was sufficient to demonstrate the product's value to the initial user group.
Ask Nielsen launched on time with the approved data set. The PII data was integrated after the compliance process was resolved, bringing the product to its intended full scope.
