Recycling Sector Research: Mapping a Vague Brief to a Climate Framework

Preeti was asked to research a manufacturing company working with recycled materials, with a brief that gave her little more than the sector name. The task was to determine whether and how the company's materials contributed to climate goals, and to make a clear recommendation to the fund.

She started by mapping the full landscape of the recycling sector, identifying what materials it covered and what the sector as a whole entailed. From there, she narrowed to the specific materials the company used, researching each one in depth to understand its properties and potential environmental contribution.

With that foundation in place, she moved to the validation layer. She checked each material against climate finance exclusion lists to confirm none were disqualified from the fund's mandate. She then worked through the relevant climate frameworks to identify where each material fit, what category of climate contribution it represented, and how it mapped to resource efficiency goals.

The output was a clear recommendation to the fund: a structured account of which category each material belonged to, how it contributed to reducing waste footprint, and why it was consistent with the fund's climate mandate. The research gave the fund a defensible, framework-backed basis for its position on the company.
