The Story

Om Prakash was responsible for evaluating investment opportunities for the MD's personal portfolio at Mahesh Group. Each assessment began with a brief to determine whether a specific opportunity was worth pursuing further, and he owned the research workstream from that point through to a decision-ready recommendation.

He started each evaluation by defining the investment question clearly, then structured his research into stages: industry and business research first, followed by financial analysis, then valuation, and finally the investment view. He studied the company's business model, industry dynamics, competitive positioning, and historical financial performance before building a financial model and running DCF, comparable company, and sensitivity analysis.

He also documented the qualitative dimensions of each opportunity, including growth drivers, competitive advantages, operational risks, and sector dynamics that could affect long-term returns. Every assumption in the model was supported by evidence from industry publications, company disclosures, and publicly available information.

The final output for each assessment was an executive summary covering the opportunity evaluation, key risks, and a clear recommendation on whether to pursue the opportunity further. After submission, the MD reviewed the analysis, questioned assumptions, and discussed whether the opportunity aligned with the group's investment objectives and risk appetite. Opportunities with a positive initial view moved to deeper evaluation; those with material concerns were held until there was greater clarity.
