The Story

Manish was tasked with building the competitive positioning for a family entertainment center company raising its first round of capital at Marquee Equity. The company was bootstrapped and performing well, but the FEC space in India had many players of varying sizes and formats, making differentiation a real challenge to articulate clearly.

He started by building a structured filter framework before pulling any data. He first mapped the company's own strengths and weaknesses in detail, then derived a set of filters that would reveal meaningful differentiation: attraction variety, hospitality focus, customer segment coverage, park type (destination versus leisure), and format (theme-based, arcade, water park, or multi-format).

Applying those filters across the competitive landscape, he found two clear differentiators. Most competitors optimized for throughput and revenue generation, with limited attention to hospitality. And most were format-specific, catering to a narrow customer segment rather than offering something for every member of a family visiting together.

He then extended the research internationally, studying how the FEC concept had played out in Japan, the United States, and Southeast Asia, where several companies had scaled to significant size. This gave the pitch a global proof point for the category's potential.

On the demand side, he pulled secondary research from government reports and third-party sources to quantify the consumption tailwind, establishing a macro foundation for the investment thesis.

All of this research was structured, cleaned, and translated into a visual competitive analysis section within the pitch deck, which the founder reviewed and largely validated.
