The Story
Manas joined BCG's global topic development team as one of its youngest inductees. The function builds firm IP and runs alongside live casework. The India BPC sector primer was his primary mandate: a published view that could travel across client conversations, pitches, and industry forums.
The project had three constituencies pulling in different directions. The partner who sponsored it wanted a provocation sharp enough to make a category CEO call him. The global topic development team wanted methodological consistency with the firm's other sector primers so the India view could sit alongside China and SEA. The local consumer team wanted it defensible in front of clients who knew the category better than BCG did, which pulled toward hedging. A provocation that is fully hedged is inert; one that is unhedged gets torn apart in the first client meeting.
He resolved the tension by getting the outcome defined before building anything. He ran short one-on-ones with each stakeholder and posed a single question: who reads this, and what do you want them to do after reading it? The partner's answer decided the structure. The document had to lead with a claim about where the category was going, not with market size, because the readers already knew the market size.
He wrote the thesis at the partner's level of sharpness and put defensibility in the evidence architecture underneath. Every claim tied to a source and a methodology, satisfying the topic development team without cluttering the narrative. Hedging lived in the appendix; the body made the claim. He ran a two-week review cadence, set the partner on a one-page structure before writing a word of prose, and got sign-off on the argument before investing in the artifact.
The primer reached 85-plus downloads and was deployed across multiple business development initiatives and proposals. It shifted Manas's standing inside BCG: he moved from being starved on consumer cases to being someone the sector leadership could ask for a view on.
He also noted one lesson he carried forward: he undermanaged the timeline against his live casework, and the primer slipped by roughly three weeks. He should have negotiated protected time at the start rather than absorbing the conflict silently.
