The Story
Krishnam joined bequant.dev as the first product hire. The platform connected users to the quantitative finance and high-frequency trading space, but retention was a problem: users were landing on the homepage, exploring briefly, and leaving without meaningful interaction.
He was given a broad mandate: understand why users drop off and fix it. His first move was to go directly to users. He ran a sustained program of user calls to understand what was happening before and after the drop-off point. What he found challenged the team's core assumption.
The team had assumed that because HFT and quant finance were lucrative and well-known in certain circles, users would arrive with enough context to engage. The user calls revealed the opposite: most users, outside a narrow set of institutional players, had little to no understanding of how quant firms worked, what HFT meant, or why it was relevant to them. They were arriving curious but leaving without a foothold.
Krishnam structured this finding into a clear product hypothesis: if users do not understand the space, they cannot engage with the platform. The fix was not a retention mechanic but an educational surface. He designed and built the Why Quant and Wiki Quant sections on the homepage end-to-end. The feature explained how quant firms operate, outlined the benefits of the space, and gave users a concrete salary comparison to anchor the value proposition.
The feature launched and immediately became the highest-engaging surface on the platform. The metric the team tracked was homepage exit rate within a 10 to 30-minute window. Before the feature, users were arriving, finding little to interact with, and leaving. After launch, 80% of homepage traffic was flowing to the new educational section, a direct reversal of the prior pattern.
