The Story
Kartik was managing the relationship with an Australian VC firm raising a multi-million dollar fund focused on healthcare startups. The firm had completed a roadshow across APAC, and Finex had facilitated investor introductions and meetings throughout the process.
The roadshow generated some interest but no material commitments. The fund managers came back frustrated, holding Finex accountable for the outcome. The conversation was direct: they had expected more from the placement relationship.
Kartik's response was to separate what Finex could control from what it could not. He acknowledged the gap between expectations and results, but was clear that Finex's role was to open doors and warm relationships, not to pitch the fund on the manager's behalf. The quality of the investor meeting, the fund's story, and the manager's ability to close were ultimately theirs to own.
Rather than letting the relationship deteriorate, he worked out a revised arrangement: Finex would continue supporting the second fund on a success-fee basis, a gesture that preserved the relationship without committing to a retainer structure that had not delivered. The client stayed on, and the engagement moved forward on reset terms.
