The Story

In his second month at UCEA, Jai was assigned to two deals simultaneously, both scheduled for the Q1 2026 IC presentation. One was the infrastructure startup using plasma boring technology. The other was a med tech company with FDA-approved devices, TickID and LymeID, for diagnosing tick and Lyme diseases.

The total window was two weeks: one week for initial due diligence on both deals, and one week for revisions and correspondence before IC submission. The infrastructure target was US-based; the med tech target was Europe-based.

Jai structured the workload by separating the dynamic and linear components of each deal. The dynamic work, primarily founder and stakeholder interviews, was scheduled around timezone availability: European calls in the morning, US calls in the evening. The linear work, building the investment memoranda, was fed through as information arrived from each data room.

At the IC, the two deals received different types of scrutiny. The med tech deal moved relatively smoothly because the company already held FDA approval. The infrastructure deal drew pushback on execution risk, given the capital intensity and the MVP stage of the product. Jai anchored his defense on the founder's track record as a serial entrepreneur with multiple unicorn exits, the pilot proof points, and the patent portfolio. Both deals received favorable recommendations.
