The Story
Ishita took on the pharma commercialization whitepaper at a point when senior bankers were tracking a boom in the sector and needed a structured view to share with PE clients. The initial brief was broad: build an industry deck that would help investors understand this emerging landscape.
She started by defining what outcome she actually needed the research to deliver. Rather than beginning with data collection, she worked backwards from the output: what would a PE firm need to know to form an investment thesis on this sector? That framing shaped everything that followed.
She mapped the industry from the ground up: unit economics, leading companies, products and services, trading multiples, and high-level themes. She tracked M&A activity over the prior years and built a five-to-six year market forecast grounded in deal patterns and sector drivers.
Digging Into the M&A Thesis
As she dug into the deal data, Ishita noticed that the M&A thesis was the thread that explained everything else. The market was shifting toward point-of-solution providers, and strategic acquirers were paying premiums for specific synergy profiles. She studied each deal individually to identify the primary thesis driving it, which required significantly more time than the rest of the research but produced the most actionable output.
She also handled a vague sub-brief from the MD on regulatory shifts driving healthcare technology adoption. Facing a wide field of government policies, she structured the analysis into three categories anchored to FDA commitments on digital innovation and regulatory science, selecting only the threads that were material to the deck's overall argument.
Delivery and Use
The completed whitepaper was circulated as a sector view to PE clients. It shaped their investment thesis: which companies were leading the sector, which were driving performance, and where to focus due diligence.
