Overview

Arhan was tasked with evaluating an Indian EV two-wheeler manufacturer at Iron Pillar, a sector he had not previously researched in depth. The company manufactured bikes and scooters and was seeking growth-stage funding. **The evaluation required building sector fluency from scratch** before any meaningful investment assessment could begin.

The Story

Arhan was tasked with evaluating an Indian EV two-wheeler manufacturer at Iron Pillar, a sector he had not previously researched in depth. The company manufactured bikes and scooters and was seeking growth-stage funding. The evaluation required building sector fluency from scratch before any meaningful investment assessment could begin.

His approach started with the market leaders. He studied Ather and Ola Electric in detail, tracing their capital raise histories, CapEx trajectories, revenue and margin progression, and product development timelines. He then looked at the traditional incumbents, TVS, Hero, and Bajaj, to understand how established ICE manufacturers were transitioning into EVs, which provided a useful lens on where the category was heading and what it cost to compete.

Stress-Testing the Company's Projections

With that benchmarking in place, Arhan turned to the company's own projections. He identified a significant gap between the company's stated capital requirements and what comparable companies had actually needed to reach similar scale. The company was also basing a meaningful portion of its growth on a product it had not yet launched, which introduced execution risk that the projections did not adequately reflect.

The valuation the company was seeking did not hold up against the benchmarks. Combined with the undercapitalization concern and the product launch dependency, the team concluded that the risk profile was too high for Iron Pillar's conviction threshold at that stage.

The Value of a Pass

The deal did not proceed, but the research was not wasted. Arhan built a working knowledge of the EV two-wheeler market, including competitive dynamics, capital intensity, and the margin profiles of both pure-play EV companies and transitioning ICE manufacturers, that would inform any future evaluation in the sector.
