Amit took on driver onboarding at Ola at a point when supply was the single most important lever in the ride-hailing marketplace. Getting more drivers onto the platform faster meant more coverage at peak times, which meant better reliability for riders and a stronger competitive position.
The Story
Amit took on driver onboarding at Ola at a point when supply was the single most important lever in the ride-hailing marketplace. Getting more drivers onto the platform faster meant more coverage at peak times, which meant better reliability for riders and a stronger competitive position.
The existing process was entirely synchronous. Drivers had to visit an Ola office in person, work through multiple human touchpoints, and wait through a process that took over a day. In a city like Bangalore, there was one office. The bottleneck was structural, and training or process improvements were not going to close the gap.
Amit and the team observed the workflow in detail, mapping where time was lost and where people became the constraint. The conclusion was that iteration would not work. The process needed to be rebuilt from scratch.
The solution was an async mobile app powered by the Aadhaar identity stack, which pulled driver data automatically and removed the need for in-person verification. The human touchpoints were eliminated, and the entire flow could be completed on a phone.
Rather than launching nationally, the team validated in Hyderabad first, working closely with city ops to identify what was working and what needed adjustment. Once the model held, they rolled it out city by city, giving each ops team time to build confidence before the next launch.
The result was a process that went from over a day to 30 minutes, removing the drop-off that had been bleeding driver supply out of the funnel at every stage.
