The Story
Alqama was working on a VIX futures trading strategy when he noticed the performance was inconsistent across different market periods. The strategy performed reasonably well in some environments but deteriorated significantly in others.
He could have tuned the parameters. But the pattern of inconsistency told him something different. If the problem were purely parameter-driven, he would have expected performance to degrade more uniformly, or to improve with modest adjustments. The uneven pattern across periods suggested the underlying assumptions of the strategy might not be holding across different market regimes.
He designed the research himself. He formulated the hypothesis that the strategy's edge might be regime-dependent, then built a research plan to test it. This included segmenting historical data into distinct market environments, evaluating signal stability across those regimes, performing out-of-sample validation, and measuring performance across multiple time periods.
The findings were clear. Some signals were only effective under specific volatility conditions, while others remained stable across environments. The issue was structural, not a parameter selection problem.
Based on those findings, Alqama redesigned the affected parts of the strategy, introduced regime-aware filters, and strengthened the validation framework to prioritize robust signals over optimized ones. He documented the full analysis and presented the findings and recommendations to his manager. The research became the basis for the next iteration of the strategy.
