The Story
Akshay joined a market entry engagement for a US-based neighborhood grocery retailer that had reached saturation in its existing geographies and was evaluating expansion into a new market. The project had two parallel tracks: a competitor lens and a consumer lens, and he owned significant portions of both.
On the competitor side, he benchmarked the financial performance of existing players in the target geography, mapped category and pricing dynamics, and assessed whether the market was everyday-low-price or premium-oriented. He also scoped inorganic growth options, identifying potential acquisition targets ranging from direct competitors to companies with supply chain or warehousing capabilities that could accelerate entry.
On the consumer side, the central question was whether the client's core strength, a popular private-label frozen food range, had a viable market in a geography where consumers strongly preferred fresh produce and home cooking. Akshay helped design a structured approach to answer this. The team surveyed around 1,000 grocery consumers, mapping their weekly basket, shopping frequency, and the 50 most common grocery items in that geography. He designed the survey structure, including screening criteria to segment respondents by income group, age, and urban versus suburban versus rural geography, reducing noise and enabling targeted cuts.
Reading the Frozen-vs-Fresh Signal
Beyond the survey, Akshay identified proxy metrics to assess whether frozen food consumption had structural tailwinds in the market. The team looked at consumer electronics sales data to track refrigerator size trends, reasoning that larger refrigerators indicated growing frozen storage capacity. They cross-referenced this with average working hours, household income, and the number of working adults per household, building a picture of whether convenience-driven consumption was rising.
He cleaned the survey data, applied the segmentation thresholds, built a comprehensive Excel model to generate different analytical cuts, and identified the findings most relevant to the client's decision. The recommendation shaped the client's expansion strategy, and the engagement extended into a long-term project management partnership for market entry execution.
