Overview

Akshat went into a one-hour expert call on Jio Ads with a clear working hypothesis: this was an advertising business that managed ad placements on Jio's own platforms, monetizing through standard ad inventory.

The Story

Akshat went into a one-hour expert call on Jio Ads with a clear working hypothesis: this was an advertising business that managed ad placements on Jio's own platforms, monetizing through standard ad inventory.

Within the first part of the call, that frame broke. The expert described something far larger. Jio Ads was not a single-platform ad manager. It was being built as a cross-platform optimization layer that could run across every Reliance-owned or Reliance-affiliated property, from JioTV to JioMart to Zee5 and beyond. The scope was an order of magnitude larger than Akshat had anticipated.

He had a decision to make. The call was structured for a one-hour transcript, and the quality of the transcript depended on the depth and relevance of the questions asked. Staying on the original framework would have produced a shallow record of a business that no longer matched the questions.

He pivoted his question set on the spot, redirecting the conversation toward the cross-platform architecture, the technical and commercial challenges of optimizing ads across properties with different ownership structures, and what the real competitive moat looked like. The transcript that came out of the call reflected the actual business, not the assumed one.
