Overview

Across his work at Qubit Capital and in freelance engagements, Ajay regularly encountered founders whose valuation expectations were disconnected from their financial reality. A recurring pattern: a founder asking for a valuation multiple that a competitor had achieved, without accounting for the difference in scale, growth rate, or market timing.

The Story

Across his work at Qubit Capital and in freelance engagements, Ajay regularly encountered founders whose valuation expectations were disconnected from their financial reality. A recurring pattern: a founder asking for a valuation multiple that a competitor had achieved, without accounting for the difference in scale, growth rate, or market timing.

When this happened, Ajay's approach was to anchor the conversation in sourced comparables. He would walk the founder through the competitor's revenue at the time of their valuation, the growth rate that justified the multiple, and the discount rate and terminal value assumptions behind the DCF. He would then show the founder what their own numbers implied under the same methodology.

He provided every source he used, attaching the market reports, filing data, and comparable transaction references so the founder could verify the inputs independently. His position was that an investor would apply the same logic, and a founder going into a raise with an unsupported valuation would lose credibility in the room.

In most cases, founders ultimately accepted the revised numbers once the sourcing was clear. The process required patience and directness, particularly with founders who had strong emotional attachment to a particular valuation figure.
