Overview

Aditya received a brief from his partner to assess whether the small arms and ammunition market in India represented a meaningful investment opportunity. The brief was broad: understand the market, the players, the funding activity, and the valuations.

The Story

Aditya received a brief from his partner to assess whether the small arms and ammunition market in India represented a meaningful investment opportunity. The brief was broad: understand the market, the players, the funding activity, and the valuations.

He ran the research end to end, mapping the top players in the domain, funding activity and trends, current valuation multiples, revenue profiles, and the domestic and international presence of key companies.

As the research progressed, he recognized that the brief contained two distinct problem statements that needed to be separated. The first was the broader small arms and ammunition market, which was large. The second was the specific sub-segment the partner was actually interested in: companies making sniper rifles and sniper-specific ammunition. That sub-segment was a much smaller and less developed market.

He structured the output as a dashboard with graphical representations and funnel analysis. The dashboard showed the size of the relevant armed forces and paramilitary buyer base, an estimate of the current sniper rifle inventory, the replacement cost per unit, and a bottom-up calculation of the total addressable market. This gave the partner a concrete, numbers-based answer to both questions: yes, there is a market for small arms and ammunition broadly, but no, the sniper rifle sub-segment is not large enough to support the investment thesis he had in mind.

The first version of the research was rejected. Rather than defending the original framing, Aditya used the rejection as a signal to understand what the partner actually needed, which led to the more precise sub-segment analysis that produced a clear answer.
