The Story
Achintya took on the research workstream for an early-stage fintech client at Fincof that was actively raising capital. The mandate was to produce a market intelligence report and investment memo that the team could use in client discussions and capital raise advisory.
He started by understanding the client's business model in depth, then identified the key competitors and relevant market segments. Data came from company reports, industry publications, startup databases, and public sources. He benchmarked competitors across business model, pricing, growth trajectory, funding profile, and market positioning.
The harder part was not collecting the data but interpreting what it actually meant. Different sources presented conflicting perspectives, and Achintya had to determine which insights were most relevant from an investor's standpoint. He filtered findings through the lens of what would move an investment decision: growth potential, market opportunity, execution risk, and competitive positioning. He prioritized insights that were consistent across multiple credible sources rather than relying on any single report.
He combined the competitive benchmarking with financial and valuation analysis to identify the company's strengths, risks, and differentiators. The findings were consolidated into a structured market intelligence report and investment memo, which the senior team used for client discussions and capital raise advisory. The senior team reviewed the analysis, refined the investment narrative, and handled the final client presentation.
When his manager questioned why he had prioritized one competitor over another during an internal review, Achintya walked through his selection criteria: market relevance, business model similarity, growth stage, and funding profile. They reviewed additional data points together, and he updated the analysis where appropriate. That exchange reinforced that good research is iterative, and that backing conclusions with evidence while remaining open to feedback produces stronger investment insights.
