Overview

When Abhiram joined CleanMax, the company was entering Bahrain as a new market for its renewable energy business. Most of his peers in similar roles were operating as part of an established GTM engine, pushing leads through a system that already existed. **Abhiram's situation was different.** He had an entire country with no prior presence, no local team infrastructure, and no playbook.

The Story

When Abhiram joined CleanMax, the company was entering Bahrain as a new market for its renewable energy business. Most of his peers in similar roles were operating as part of an established GTM engine, pushing leads through a system that already existed. Abhiram's situation was different. He had an entire country with no prior presence, no local team infrastructure, and no playbook.

The scope of what he owned reflected that reality. On the client side, he ran cold calls and warm introductions from existing clients, built partnerships, and curated proposals. The clients he brought in included AWS, Amazon, Nestle, and Coca-Cola. Proposal curation was automated to handle the volume.

On the financing side, Abhiram sat in rooms with international lenders who were unfamiliar with both the region and distributed solar, and explained the business to them. He built the project financing and cash flow models internally, work that would normally sit with a dedicated project finance team in CleanMax's India operations. He reviewed term sheets. Approximately $40 million USD in structured debt was raised through international lenders.

The market had real structural headwinds. As an Indian company, CleanMax faced nationalization norms and regulatory constraints in Bahrain. Many local companies were backed by family houses with lower return expectations, which made cost competition difficult. Abhiram and the team responded by competing on product quality and execution rather than price.

Results

Signed project value grew from $8 million to $55 million USD, a 600% increase year on year. The growth came not from cost leadership but from being the superior provider of solar in the market.
